Job Objective:
The Advertising Sales Manager leads the Advertising Department within the Daily Californian, the nonprofit student newspaper at the University of California Berkeley. He or she oversees all sales efforts and ensures that the department consistently meets revenue goals. Working closely with the Publisher, the Finance Manager, and the Production lead, the Sales Manager brainstorms and initiates new revenue initiatives and coordinates these new projects with the Editorial department. Finally, the Sales Manager oversees all of the recruitment of new student Account Executives, training of these students, and promotions into student management roles.
Responsibilities:
- Ensures that the Advertising Department meets its revenue goals each month.
- Explores and initiates new revenue opportunities and follows through to completion.
- Oversees all advertising sales made by both the student Account Executives and Senior Account Executive.
- Solves any problems that may arise with advertisements scheduled (including financial, art, and customer problems).
- Identifies hiring needs and recruits new student Account Executives when needed.
o Trains all of the students with the assistance of the Advertising student managers.
o Manages expectations of the students by creating and managing appropriate performance benchmarks and compensates appropriately.
- Assists students in their sales efforts by occasionally going on sales calls with them, discussing approaches and coaching them with proper office etiquette.
- Uses and at times troubleshoots Quickbooks, CP-Ads and Redbooks software.
- Organizes networking opportunities for students' post-collegiate careers.
