The Magik*Magik Orchestra...

...is America's only symphonic orchestra dedicated to collaborating with artists from the rock and pop community. Magik*Magik is currently made up of 100 young classical musicians from San Francisco.

Since its smash debut just 3 years ago performing the West Coast premiere of "Popcorn Superhet Receiver," composed by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, Magik*Magik has since collaborated with a long list of high profile and independent artists and organizations including: Death Cab For Cutie, The Dodos, How to Dress Well, John Vanderslice, Mike Patton, Sting, Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Third Eye Blind, Chris Botti, The Fifth Dimension, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Keb Mo, Chicago, Fred Frith, Hauschka, Dustin O'Halloran, Tin Hat, OM, The Lonely Forest, Zoe Keating, Matt Lowell, Christina Vantzou, Tidelands, Debbie Neigher, John Clarke, The Contemporary Jewish Museum, SFMOMA, Performa, Another Planet Entertainment, Noise Pop, The Bay Bridged, Daytrotter, and many more.

Recent appearances by the Magik*Magik include a performance with Death Cab For Cutie on VH1 Storytellers, a performance at Yerba Buena gardens with Israeli band Church of Reason, and a live symphonic performance at Herbst Theater with John Vanderslice.

Magik*Magik is the official studio orchestra of Tiny Telephone Recording Studios, owned and operated by John Vanderslice. Magik*Magik is a non-profit corporation and is a fiscally sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a 501(c)3 organization.

The Magik*Magik Orchestra.....

. . .is looking for 2 teams of interns to assist the 1) Creative Director and the 2) Publicity and Education Director of the Magik*Magik Orchestra.

This internship is for College Credit only, all internships are unpaid. You will be reporting directly to the founding directors of Magik*Magik Orchestra. Meal and MUNI monthly travel stipends are provided. All interns must have a valid drivers license and be able to transport heavy music equipment to shows and recording sessions (via own car, borrowed car, cab or bus)

While we cannot offer compensation, we will offer: valuable 1-on-1 career coaching to each intern, a Magik*Magik personalized letter of recommendation, an opportunity to work hands-on with high-profile clients and organizations (a great resume builder), multiple opportunities to work in a variety of behind-the-scenes musical environments (concert venues, recording studios, educational projects).

Creative Direction Intern Team (2 interns) & Publicity/Education Intern Team (2 interns)

Interns for both teams will be responsible for the following tasks and activities:

Online / Administrative Duties:

- keep internal wiki-site updated to reflect current and potential gigs; update the Magik gcal as necessary

- rent rehearsal space as needed for performance projects, plan in advance for all day-of needs (music gear, food, etc)

- manage schedules, riders, production docs and comp lists for performances

- daily email interaction and co-management of projects with Creative Director and Education/Media Director

- purchase gear and other office supplies or musical materials as needed

- assistance with contracting musicians for projects and upkeep of contact database

- organize meeting notes and send final "minutes" to Creative Director and Education/Media Director

Day-Of / On-Site Duties:

- Executive Committee Friday morning Powwows

- Attend weekly Friday powwow with Creative Director and Education/Media Director and take notes (this will be a rotating job amongst the 4 interns)

- Rehearsals and Performances:

- food management for musicians: plan, purchase, transport, set-up, maintain serve and clean-up all food service

- assistant to Project Manager: errands, coffee runs, printing and handing out music, room set-up, gear and materials transport

- point of contact for players: late calls, directions, greeting/hosting, signage

- keep project on schedule

- day-of documentation (photos, videos)

Creative Direction Interns will be additionally be responsible for:

- Composing / Arranging Assistance:

- Attend all rehearsals and make changes to parts and scores (Sibelius proficiency required, we do NOT use Finale)

- Create mockups and demos of Creative Director's arrangements via own home computer set up (ProTools preferred but Logic ok too)

- Archive and organize old scores and parts for past projects at Magik offices

- Assist with printing and binding music as necessary

- Assist with mailing hard copies of scores, cds, music and any other music materials

- Personnel Management / Human Resources Assistance:

- respond to inquiries from new musicians for upcoming auditions and assist with organizing audition process

- send thank you cards and acknowledgement emails as appropriate to players and team members

Education/Publicity Interns will additionally be responsible for:

- Media Editing and Archiving:

- Take pictures and video at important rehearsals and performances and edit them for web presentation (Final Cut or iMovie proficiency required)

- Publicity Assisting:

- assist with press tracking and archiving

- work with Director on content development for social media platforms (facebook, etc)

- Educational/Audience Development Programs:

- learn assembly, basic maintenance, and basic instruction of all instruments in the Musical Petting Zoo

- assist Director in development and implementation of educational/audience engagement programs

Who are we looking for? Someone who is....

- Well-organized, calm and patient

- Possesses the right social skills for high-profile client situations (absolutely no pushing or hawking of personal music projects to Magik clients allowed; if you are a musician, please do not plan on giving your CD to our clients and artists)

- Passionate about music, performance, recording and collaboration

- Enthusiasm about the importance of Magik's service to its collaborators and the art Magik creates

- Grounded support for project managers (accountability, flexibility, quick on your feet with problem solving)

- Experienced in working in teams but also able to work efficiently on your own

- Passionate about customer service and hospitality (we are a service company to bands, artists and musicians).
