Overview

California Shakespeare Theater, one of the Bay Area's leading theater companies, seeks a Director of Marketing & Communications (DMC). The DMC is a senior staff position overseeing all aspects of marketing, brand development, and organizational messaging for Cal Shakes. This position is responsible for planning, supervising, and evaluating strategic marketing programs to successfully achieve attendance and earned revenue goals. In addition, the DMC is responsible for determining strategies for articulating, in collaboration with organizational leadership, messaging to all constituencies of Cal Shakes' three core programs (Main Stage, Artistic Learning, and New Works/New Communities), ensuring that the organization communicates with external stakeholders with a unified language that accurately reflects the Theater's vision, mission, and values.

Areas of marketing under the leadership of the DMC include: ticket sales campaigns (subscriptions, single tickets, and group sales); public relations; social media; audience research; box office; telemarketing; house management; and merchandising for the Theater. She/he will collaborate with the Artistic Director and with Artistic Learning and New Works/New Communities program directors to lead marketing and messaging for these core programs. In addition, she/he will work closely with the Director of Development to expand the Theater's broad spectrum of audiences and donors, and to increase their financial investment and program participation.

Through seasonal productions at our recently renovated outdoor amphitheater, and in year-round educational and community-based programs, Cal Shakes expands access to the arts and builds diverse ownership of our region's cultural vitality by fostering participatory approaches to the artistic process and arts education.

Responsibilities

In achieving the responsibilities of the position, the Director of Marketing & Communications will:

serve in a senior staff capacity to achieve and evaluate Cal Shakes' Strategic Plan;

work closely with the Artistic Director in connecting the artistic vision with marketing and messages;

embrace and promote a culture of communication and transparency where departments work fluidly with each other toward achieving the goals of the Theater;

engage with each member of the staff and Board of Directors, as well as other volunteers, and;

help fulfill the Theater's mission, vision, and values

Marketing, Brand Management & Organizational Messaging -- 65%

Oversee all aspects of season subscription, single ticket, and group sales campaigns, including direct mail, email, advertising, and telemarketing.

Develop effective pricing strategies, promotions, and policies that fulfill revenue goals and brand development.

Oversee management of box office, patron services, and front of house operations. Ensure efficient, courteous service and customer satisfaction.

Oversee the development and production of all Cal Shakes collateral materials, including subscription brochures, ads, posters, signs, electronic media, advertising copy, telephone sales scripts, press releases, email newsletters, and program books.

Direct marketing efforts to support Artistic Learning fee-based programs: Summer Shakespeare Conservatories, Student Discovery Matinees, classroom residencies, and classes.

Supervise website content with Publications Manager and Graphic Designer.

Supervise development of Theater Store merchandise and store operations.

Lead market and patron research and analysis.

Articulate key messaging for all external constituencies.

Collaborate with each department to ensure the quality, consistency, and accuracy of all Theater communications in accordance with style sheet, mission, and image of Theater.

Budgets and Planning -- 15%

Work with the Managing Director to establish appropriate goals for all ticket sales campaigns

Develop budgets, work plans, and calendars for each event and campaign; monitor the progress of each, and adjust plans when necessary.

Participate with designated staff and Board in strategic and long-range planning; prepare reports, plans, and projections.

Administrative -- 10%

Oversee the development and maintenance of tickets sales systems and records; ensure the accuracy of ticket revenue reports; provide reports.

Work with Finance Director to ensure timely deposits, sales reports, settlements, and providing financial information as requested.

Negotiate or supervise negotiation of contracts with outside vendors for direct mail, photography, telemarketing, merchandise, design, and printing services; ensure competitive pricing and work quality.

Hire, train, manage, and evaluate the performance of all marketing, box office, patron services and house staff.

Board of Directors -- 5%

Work with Board Marketing Committee.

Report to the Board on progress of ticket sales campaigns; provide other reports and communications as requested.

Present marketing, pricing, and promotion strategies to the Board.

Other -- 5%

Attend performances to assure service quality control onsite and fulfill VIP and hospitality duties.

Support fundraising efforts of the Theater including attendance at fundraising events and relationships with individual and institutional donors.

Develop and maintain relationships with local business and arts leaders to enhance awareness of and support for the Theater.

Attend community civic and cultural events; represent the Theater as requested.

Assist with relations with catering service to ensure positive "front of house" experience.

Respond to customer complaints and letters.

Communicate updates, changes, cancellations to patrons.

Supervises Marketing Manager, Publications Manager, Box Office Manager, House Manager, outside Web Master and Designer, and co-supervises Patron Services Manager (w/ Director of Development).

Qualifications

- B.A. in related field; minimum five years professional experience

- Excellent communication skills

- Demonstrated creativity and innovative approach to marketing

- Exceptional interpersonal & organizational skills

- Customer Service savvy

- Fiscal management and sales forecasting/analysis.

- Familiarity and comfort with Microsoft Office, social media tools, and ticketing software.

Working Conditions

Efficient execution of the job during the season will necessitate that the employee have access to, and be able to operate an automobile, in order to work at the Theater when required.

At the administrative offices: work in an office environment, sustained posture in a seated position for prolonged periods of time. Open, lively office setting.

At the Theater: extended standing, walking on uneven ground (hills, gravel, and rocks), working outdoors with no effective protection from weather for extended periods of time.
