Position Summary:
The Center is looking for highly motivated, experienced teaching artists to be a part of the Center's My Story: Literacy through the Arts outreach program. The photography teaching artists will work with up to 6 classes of fifth graders in 3 separate schools in the Escondido Union School District focusing on digital photography and literacy. Program duration is from October 2011 through April 2012.
Position Responsibilities: Duties may include but are not limited to:
Work with up to 6 classes in three schools and deliver a curriculum consisting of fifteen 50-minute sequential classroom sessions based on California's visual and performing arts and English language arts standards to fifth grade students in the Escondido Union School District. Sessions will take place from October 2011- March 2012.
o Effectively teach digital photography and language arts lessons.
o Manage classrooms of up to 35 students, many of whom are English language learners.
o Participate in weekly meetings.
Review the curriculum and provide ongoing input.
Participate in developing the final student projects, exhibition, and public presentations.
Provide feedback on the curriculum and the program by administering evaluation surveys to students in the program.
Work with the Center's education staff and classroom teachers, meeting weekly throughout the program.
Teach in a style that provides learning opportunities for students, encourages self-reflection and personal expression, and supports the classroom teacher's instruction in core subject areas.
Other duties as assigned by the Education Manager.
Qualifications:
Minimum 1-3 years public or private school teaching experience or demonstrated ability to teach large groups of elementary school children.
Strong background in arts education and instruction at the K-6 level preferred, especially with English language learners.
Demonstrated ability to actively engage elementary level students in hands-on learning experiences.
Training in and current active practice in photography and/or visual arts preferred.
Strong basic knowledge of digital photography including computer software programs (iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, Power Point, Publisher, etc.).
Able to meet deadlines, follow instructions, stay on budget, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
Excellent organizational skills, ability to work collaboratively, and strong interpersonal skills.
Bachelor's Degree in education, visual arts or other related field.
Preferred knowledge of California visual and performing arts and English language standards
Ability to transport equipment and materials to and from school sites unassisted.
o Valid California driver's license.
o Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.

Work Schedule:
The incumbent will be required to work a flexible schedule based on classroom schedules, prep time, etc., with the ability to work long hours or overtime as required to perform duties. Incumbent will be required to complete a daily timesheet.
